Lime


Lime -

Is commercially made from limestone or other forms of mineral calcium carbonates by the action of heat, as by roasting in kilns. When pure, it is a white, brittle substance. "Unslacked Lime" is the dry product before the addition of water or its absorption from the atmosphere. The addition of water, if not in excess, produces great heat. Its chief use is in mortars and cements, but it is also employed as a fertilizing agent, in the purification of coal gas, in tanning and for numerous medicinal purposes and laboratory processes. Lime is found in many foods and is essential to the formation of the human frame.

Lime water, when mixed with an equal or greater quantity of milk, is an excellent

remedy for vomiting caused by irritability of the stomach. A solution of ordinary strength is obtained by dissolving a piece about the size of a hen's egg in a pint of water.
